Aquabear X-Mas at Casa THIS FRIDAY!

The holiday season is upon us. Aquabear Legion is hosting a special X-Mas show at Casa Cantina in Athens this Friday, December 16th starting at 10:30pm. Weird Science, Bonzai, State Park, and Weedghost will play music all night (in that reverse order with Weedghost kicking things off around 10:30pm) and we will have Aquabear Volume 4 compilations and new(ish) Aquabear t-shirts for those last minute gifts on your list. Plus we will be giving away stickers, buttons, and even a cd or two throughout the night… why not? It’s the holidays! Admission is $3 and all proceeds benefit the Aquabear Legion and specifically the 2012 Aquabear County Fair! Support some local music before the year is out and see some great bands.

Aquabear Hosts FREE Show at Casa Cantina THIS FRIDAY

Aquabear Legion is hosting another FREE show at Casa Cantina this Friday, August 26th at 10:30pm! The D-Rays will headline the evening with their surfy punk rock tunes, Dune is a new Athens stoner rock band featuring members of We March (and many other Athens bands), Homemade Drugs (ex-Sandcrawler) hail from Cincinnati and are in town to record their new EP with Chris Lute, and Bram Riddlebarger & His Lonesome Self will open up the night with a solo set from the one man band. 13th Annual Athens Community Music Festival is August 20, Schedule Announced

For the past 13 years Athens has celebrated its diverse and talented music community with the annual Athens Community Music Festival and this year’s takes place this coming Saturday, August 20th. Over 30 bands (all Athens!) at 6 different venues all day and night. The festivities kick off at Donkey with a performance from one of my favorite songwriters Mr. Mike Elliott at 5pm, and things continue all night long at The Union, Casa Cantina, Jackie O’s Brewery, Jackie O’s Public House, The Smiling Skull Saloon, and Donkey Coffee. This has always been one of my favorite nights of the year. Big thanks goes out to Scott Winland for making this thing happen every year. Full lineup and schedule after the jump!

This weekend, June 2nd through 4th, the All Campus Radio Network (ACRN) presents its annual Lobsterfest. This year’s fest features many local and regional bands to create a full and diverse lineup. This event is sponsored by ACRN and in part by the Student Activities Commission and local businesses. Lobsterfest kicks off Thursday at 10 p.m. at Casa Cantina. Headliners include Columbus band Tin Armor and Athens act Scubadog, while The Kyle Sowashes and Stomp the Condor, both of Columbus, are opening. Lobsterfest continues Friday at 10 p.m. at The Union. Headliners include Detroit art rockers Child Bite and Columbus post-punk band Narrow and the Brights. The night will begin with Cincinnati act Evolve, and Athens band Nurser. Finally, on Saturday at noon, Lobsterfest takes over South Green’s lawn for an all-day extravaganza. New York City dream pop band Asobi Seksu and Detroit indie-rockers Prussia will be headlining. Athens favorites Brothertiger and She Bears will also be playing on Saturday. Aquabear Spring Break TONIGHT at Casa Cantina in Athens!

Attention Athenians! Our wonderful town is extra sleepy this week so come out an enjoy YOUR well deserved break from all the craziness of the students with an awesome FREE show of Ohio rock and roll at Casa Cantina TONIGHT (Thursday, March 24) at 10:30. We welcome Athens ex-pats In Silent Movies down from Columbus to join local acts The D-Rays (awesome loud and fast rock and roll, members of Speedknobs), and Poppycock (Athens legends who have returned for some awesome shows as of late). And if that wasn’t enough… we added a short set from Aquabear favorites the experimental/improv duo Weedghost! Hope to see you there.

Aquabear County Fair Preview: NIGHT TWO Friday, March 4 at Casa Cantina

The 5th annual Aquabear County Fair is coming up this weekend (March 3-6) and we think this year just might be the best yet. The Aquabear is serving up four days of Ohio music with 16 bands. Remember to head over to our Facebook to see our favorite videos of all of this year’s bands. FRIDAY, March 4th the County Fair at Casa Cantina with a FREE SHOW featuring She Bears (Columbus), Whale Zombie (Athens), and Narrow & The Brights (Columbus). The show starts at 10:30pm and is FREE, however we do encourage donations which will go to Aquabear Legion and helps us cover some of the costs of the Aquabear County Fair! She Bears call Columbus home now, but they just can’t stay away from Athens. These guys have been busy the past year… touring around the country, signing to Deep Elm Records, and showing up somehow on both Teen Mom and in the Apple Store. But, trust me these guys aren’t big enough superstars to not want you to buy them drinks. Athens Community Music Festival is THIS SATURDAY, August 21!

From the fine folks at Athens Community Music Festival: The 12th annual Athens Community Music Festival will take place Saturday, August 21st, featuring over thirty-five local acts at seven uptown venues. All proceeds go to grant opportunities for local musicians and music education. Admission is $10 for an all-venue wristband or $5 per location. Tickets will be available the day of the event at the Smiling Skull Saloon, Donkey Coffee, The Union, Jackie O’s, Salaam and the Casa Cantina. COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Dragline Bros

Dragline Bros. (formerly The Redtails for those that can go back that far) are one of the most kickass rock and roll bands I have ever seen. Aquabear is glad to welcome them back for another County Fair TONIGHT at Casa Cantina they will be closing out the night. This band contains some of Athens’ finest musicians, as a bassist I would give my left leg to play like Andrew Weiland and I am sure most guitarists would feel that way about Seth Riddlebarger’s solos, and drummers for Chris McKee’s everything. And they will be joined tonight by a few extra members, though we know it’s not Tim Peacock cause he went to Pittsburgh for the weekend. COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: She Bears

Aquabear gave She Bears some love (it’s a bear thing) a while back when they put out their last record. This interview is funnier than anything that I could write right now, so we will just link to that. She Bears are from Athens, Ohio though I hear talk they will be leaving for the bright lights of Columbus, Ohio after spending the Summer touring around. Come on out to Aquabear County Fair night two a free show at Casa Cantina on Friday, March 5th to see She Bears join Dragline Bros, Manor Animals, and Chris Biester. COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Manor Animals

Manor Animals are an Athens supergroup of sorts, made up of the five residents of The Bruce Manor house on West Union Street in Athens. Tim Race (Russenorsk), Zach Inscho (Seascapes, Russenorsk), Alex Eiler (She Bears), Josh Landis (In Silent Movies), and Mike Jones (also of In Silent Movies) make up a group that despite their involvement in many other projects definitely has it own sound. These songs rock and their is a depth to their live shows that comes from being in a band with everyone you live in a house with. Good stuff. They just finished an EP that I am hoping to get a hold of soon. Manor Animals will be playing the Aquabear County Fair at Casa Cantina on Friday, March 5th and that is a FREE SHOW, so you have no excuse. COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Chris Biester

Chris Biester is arguably the best damn musician in this town, so what better way to open up the Friday night Casa show then with a set from him? Chris hosts the weekly Wednesday Open Stage at Casa Cantina and melts all of our faces with the occasional Chickenpussy performance besides working as an artist at Passion Works Studio in uptown Athens. And of course, I cannot preview a Biester show without bringing up his former band, Athens legends Appalachian Death Ride. For those of you who have never heard ADR you should remedy that problem immediately. INTERVIEW: She Bears

She Bears are releasing their new record, I Found Myself Asleep tonight at Casa Cantina. Aquabear had a chance to talk to Stephen Pence about the band, their new album, boats, getting drunk, record contracts, and a lot more. It should be noted that an original idea for the interview was for me to send Stephen questions and then he would get really, really drunk and leave me voicemails answering them late at night. I thought it was a great idea, but the logistics fell apart a bit after 13 voice mails and a lack of a good transcribing system. I am including some of the voicemail ramblings, which include contributions from: Stephen, Shea Stanley (a local hobo witch doctor who as of press time is not in the band), and Ryan (who is in the band). Other folks left some messages too sorry if you were left out, also not all of those messages are transcribed here.. Interview after the break….

The Aquabear Legion is celebrating the release of yet another compilation (Volume 3!, our 5th overall..) on Saturday, July 26th at Casa Cantina here in Athens.
