14th Annual Athens Community Music Festival is August 11

Every year one of the best things about summer in Athens, Ohio (besides the quiet and numerous public parking options) is the annual multi-venue Athens Community Music Festival, which celebrates its 14th year on Saturday, August 11. The night is a sampling of Athens music of all varieties, so get a good nights rest and drink a lot of coffee because there is a lot of stuff to see.

This year’s ACMF will feature 35 acts on 6 stages, including Donkey Coffee, Casa Cantina, Jackie O’s (both rooms), The Smiling Skull and The Union. Proceeds for this year’s festival will again benefit ARTS/West and The Bryan Winland Art & Music Scholarship Fund.

The schedule is still be sorted out (and we will have it here when it is announced!) but the lineup so far features:  Stella (original line-up!), Wheels on Fire, Hellnaw, Scubadog, The D-Rays, Hex Net, Weird Science, Goodbye Goats, Black Spyral Dancer, Dropdead Sons, Leah & Adam, Laura Nadeau, The County Pharaohs, Broken Ring, Dysfunktional Family, The Corbin Marsh Band, M.O.P., Acer Negundo, Hippie Grinder and tons more to be announced!

$5 for any one venue / or $8 for an all venue pass

And.. Jason Frederick (native Athenian musician/artist now living in Chicago) designed and printed this year’s poster! This summer Jason’s work was featured on the cover of the Chicago Reader for their Pitchfork Music Festival edition, and the ACMF poster is awesome as well.

PANCAKE PRE-GAME: Fluff Bakery & Catering

Fluff Bakery & Catering treats will be at the Aquabear Pancake Breakfast along with their Blockhead Donuts! Sunday, January 29 from 1pm-4pm at ARTS/West.

The best day of the entire year is approaching. Aquabear Legion’s annual Pancake Breakfast is Sunday, January 29th at ARTS/West in Athens, Ohio! Last year we decided it made sense to involve the unbelievable local food community here in the Athens area with our fundraiser to help support unbelievable local music and the best day of the year became even better. ALL WEEK we will be spotlighting the local food producers and businesses we are working with this year. See you all at the Aquabear Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, January 29th from 1:00pm-4:00pm at ARTS/West, 132 West State Street in Athens.

Fluff Bakery & Catering is a relatively new addition to Court Street in Athens, Ohio but it is already gaining quite the reputation for being very, very, very, very awesome. Was that enough? They make tons of amazing treats (including homemade snickers bars, whoopie pies, and various sweets) and serve a solid sandwich too all while working with alot of local producers. Fluff has also been making Blockhead Donuts, which will be available for an upgrade at this year’s Pancake Breakfast! DONUTS! Plus, they are nice enough to still hang out with us shifty rock and roll types even though you have to get up real early to make good food.

“Fluff Bakery & Catering exists to fill tummies and tanks with sweet treats and scratch-baked fuel for the soul. C’mon, there’s no better time for dessert… Life is fun. Eat it up.  Fluff Bakery & Catering seeks to fill the Athens community with uncompromising bakery and scratch-baked products. Fluff strives to build and provide a place of learning, sharing and community – A place to get away from the everyday worries and to bask in the sights and smells of a sugar-laced heaven, a land of milk and honey”

From their website, “Shagbark Seed & Mill Co. was launched by the Appalachian Staple Foods Collaborative (ASFC) as its first business toward building a sustainable staple food system model in our region. Shagbark Seed & Mill Co. key function is in having the necessary processing equipment to turn out dry beans and grain, seed, and flour for consumers. Shagbark’s line of flour, dry beans, and whole grain will lay the foundation for adding cereals, mixes, and breads in the next year. Among our most recent new products are 100% whole spelt artisan bread and corn tortilla chips and crackers.”

Also, Snowville always sends along extra milk for drinkin’ and this year we are really excited to have their new chocolate milk too. Snowville makes some amazing stuff and its available all around Ohio and even as far as Washington DC. Check out their website and Facebook page, but more importantly find out where you can buy their products! Here’s a quick look at Snowville in their own words after the break. Aquabear at ARTS/West THIS THURSDAY: Chat Logs, Many Mansions, Dead Winds of Summer

Aquabear Legion is having another fantastic evening of music at ARTS/West in Athens, Ohio on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10 at 7:30pm. We hope that you will join us. We welcome Chat Logs and Many Mansions both on tour from the far away land of Brooklyn, opening will be Dead Winds of Summer.

Chat Logs is a hyper-visceral psychedelic noise-punk trio in Brooklyn, NY. Their blistering live shows from The Whitney Museum of American Art to filthy Bushwick DIY venues have earned them a reputation as one of Brooklyn’s loudest and most surreal acts.

Many Mansions makes post-world music fused with psychedelic and hypnotic passages of aural landscape and danceable world beats.

“…the kind of party that will make your mind vaporize into a den of bobbing movements and involuntary motion. It’s music that can and will make you feel as if you’re losing control of things while becoming considerably more in control of vacationing craziness.” —Daytrotter

Dead Winds of Summer is the beautiful atmospheric loops and sounds of Andrew Lampela.

Chat Logs and Many Mansions are supporting their new record, a split cassette LP, “Control This.” Copies will be available at the show!

$5 for touring bands and space
ALL AGES, no booze

Aquabear Live at ARTS/West: Moon High, Time & Temperature, Dead Winds of Summer

Aquabear Legion’s Live at ARTS/West series returns TONIGHT (Friday, September 9) with a great lineup featuring Moon High and Time & Temperature from Columbus, Ohio and an opening set from Athens’ own Andrew Lampela’s project Dead Winds of Summer.

Moon High come back to Athens after the July release of their new record Six Suns (buy it here online, or come to the show!) and play in what we are honored to know is one of their favorite rooms. They have been playing around Ohio too including stops in Cincinnati and Cleveland, and gave us the fantastic “Autumn Leaves” for Aquabear Legion Volume 4.  Time & Temperature is Val Glenn and she writes and performs some great songs. Her new album Cream of the Low Tide is available for a free download from her bandcampPeople With Animal Heads says Val “has been able to create singer/songwriter music for people who are sick to death of singer/songwriter music”. That sounds good to us. Athens’ own Aquabear Legionnaire Andrew Lampela will open the night up with a set from his solo project Dead Winds of Summer. Get there early cause he likes to play before people come.

Music starts at 8:00pm sharp. ALL AGES / NO ALCOHOL.

Suggested $4 cover for bands and space.

ARTS/West is located at 132 West State Street in Athens, Ohio. Right up the road from Casa Cantina and uptown at the fork in the road by the West State Street cemetary. Parking round back, bring friends.

Videos after the jump.

Aquabear County Fair Preview: DAY FOUR Sunday, March 6 at ARTS/West

The Aquabear County Fair closes out with a visit from Columbus' Super Desserts, Brian Harnetty, and Adam Remnant. 2pm at ARTS/West, it's a free show and potluck!

The 5th annual Aquabear County Fair is coming up this weekend (March 3-6) and we think this year just might be the best yet. The Aquabear is serving up four days of Ohio music with 16 bands.

We finish the 5th annual Aquabear County Fair off with a FREE afternoon potluck at the always awesome ARTS/West (132 W. State Street in Athens) on SUNDAY, MARCH 6 at 2:00pm. Its a great lineup too featuring Super Desserts (columbus), Brian Harnetty (columbus), and Athens’ own Adam Remnant. Plus it’s free (though donations help pay for bands, space, and sound) and it’s a potluck so bring some food to share and enjoy some amazing music. Trust us, you will have a great time. We’re bringing kelbasa and bread from Crumbs and a giant chocolate bunny.

Super Desserts are a fantastic band from Columbus, Ohio. Come see them this afternoon and you will love them as much as we do.

Brian Harnetty is a musician and artist from ohio, and his work involves overlooked elements of sound. many of his pieces transform found material––including field recordings, transcriptions, and historic recordings––into personal sound worlds. He’s recorded and worked with Will Oldham, and graced stages from Europe to the Southern Theater.

Adam Remnant has been one of Athens’ most respected songwriters for a decade and appears at ARTS/West for a special solo show. Adam’s band Southeast Engine is releasing its new album Canary on MISRA Records in a few weeks and embarking on another tour.

Venue Spotlight: ARTS/West

by Kris Poland –

Go West, Young Bands

There is a place on West State Street where Athens music lovers can see some of the area’s best musicians display their talents. It is a place where engaging local paintings and photographs adorn the walls and where community members meet to consolidate support for the arts. It is a place that has been an invaluable resource for area arts organizations and individual artists since its inception. But its staff is unlikely to serve you vegan burritos.

The place is ARTS/West, and Emily Prince hopes that it will increase its presence in the regional arts community for years to come. Prince is ARTS/West’s program specialist and directs many of this venue’s day-to-day activities. She describes her place of work as, “a venue and a little bit more.” Indeed. The administrative and artistic support that ARTS/West provides to Athens’ performing artists includes establishing press contacts and authoring press releases, organization of events, skilled instruction, technical equipment, as well as additional resources and services. A little bit more than a venue? Prince has a knack for understatement.

A collaboration between filmmaker Jem Cohen and the Washington D.C band Fugazi, the project covers the ten-year period from the band’s inception in 1987 to 1997. Far from a traditional documentary, the project is a musical document: a portrait of musicians at work.

The film takes its title from the Fugazi song of the same name, from their 1993 album, In on the Kill Taker. Editing of the film was done by both Cohen and the members of the band over the course of five years. It was shot from 1987 through 1998 on super 8, 16mm and video and is composed mainly of footage of concerts, interviews with the band members, practices, tours and time spent in the studio recording their 1995 album, Red Medicine. [3] The film also includes portraits of fans as well as interviews with them at various Fugazi shows around the United States throughout the years. The Instrument Soundtrack by Fugazi was released in conjunction with the film.
