PANCAKE PRE-GAME: Fluff Bakery & Catering

The best day of the entire year is approaching. Aquabear Legion’s annual Pancake Breakfast is Sunday, January 29th at ARTS/West in Athens, Ohio! Last year we decided it made sense to involve the unbelievable local food community here in the Athens area with our fundraiser to help support unbelievable local music and the best day of the year became even better. ALL WEEK we will be spotlighting the local food producers and businesses we are working with this year. See you all at the Aquabear Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, January 29th from 1:00pm-4:00pm at ARTS/West, 132 West State Street in Athens. Fluff Bakery & Catering is a relatively new addition to Court Street in Athens, Ohio but it is already gaining quite the reputation for being very, very, very, very awesome. Was that enough? They make tons of amazing treats (including homemade snickers bars, whoopie pies, and various sweets) and serve a solid sandwich too all while working with alot of local producers. Fluff has also been making Blockhead Donuts, which will be available for an upgrade at this year’s Pancake Breakfast! DONUTS! Plus, they are nice enough to still hang out with us shifty rock and roll types even though you have to...

Aquabear Legion is having another fantastic evening of music at ARTS/West in Athens, Ohio on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10 at 7:30pm. We hope that you will join us. We welcome Chat Logs and Many Mansions both on tour from the far away land of Brooklyn, opening will be Dead Winds of Summer. Chat Logs is a hyper-visceral psychedelic noise-punk trio in Brooklyn, NY. Their blistering live shows from The Whitney Museum of American Art to filthy Bushwick DIY venues have earned them a reputation as one of Brooklyn’s loudest and most surreal acts. Many Mansions makes post-world music fused with psychedelic and hypnotic passages of aural landscape and danceable world beats. “…the kind of party that will make your mind vaporize into a den of bobbing movements and involuntary motion. It’s music that can and will make you feel as if you’re losing control of things while becoming considerably more in control of vacationing craziness.” —Daytrotter Dead Winds of Summer is the beautiful atmospheric loops and sounds of Andrew Lampela. Chat Logs and Many Mansions are supporting their new record, a split cassette LP, “Control This.” Copies will be available at the show! $5 for touring bands and space ALL AGES,...

Aquabear Live at ARTS/West: Moon High, Time & Temperature, Dead Winds of Summer

Aquabear Legion’s Live at ARTS/West series returns TONIGHT (Friday, September 9) with a great lineup featuring Moon High and Time & Temperature from Columbus, Ohio and an opening set from Athens’ own Andrew Lampela’s project Dead Winds of Summer. Moon High come back to Athens after the July release of their new record Six Suns (buy it here online, or come to the show!) and play in what we are honored to know is one of their favorite rooms. They have been playing around Ohio too including stops in Cincinnati and Cleveland, and gave us the fantastic “Autumn Leaves” for Aquabear Legion Volume 4.  Time & Temperature is Val Glenn and she writes and performs some great songs. Her new album Cream of the Low Tide is available for a free download from her bandcamp! People With Animal Heads says Val “has been able to create singer/songwriter music for people who are sick to death of singer/songwriter music”. That sounds good to us. Athens’ own Aquabear Legionnaire Andrew Lampela will open the night up with a set from his solo project Dead Winds of Summer. Get there early cause he likes to play before people come. Music starts at 8:00pm...

Venue Spotlight: ARTS/West

Venue Spotlight: ARTS/West

by Kris Poland - Go West, Young Bands There is a place on West State Street where Athens music lovers can see some of the area’s best musicians display their talents. It is a place where engaging local paintings and photographs adorn the walls and where community members meet to consolidate support for the arts. It is a place that has been an invaluable resource for area arts organizations and individual artists since its inception. But its staff is unlikely to serve you vegan burritos. The place is ARTS/West, and Emily Prince hopes that it will increase its presence in the regional arts community for years to come. Prince is ARTS/West’s program specialist and directs many of this venue’s day-to-day activities. She describes her place of work as, “a venue and a little bit more.” Indeed. The administrative and artistic support that ARTS/West provides to Athens’ performing artists includes establishing press contacts and authoring press releases, organization of events, skilled instruction, technical equipment, as well as additional resources and services. A little bit more than a venue? Prince has a knack for understatement.

Fugazi: “Instrument” Screening on 4/9!

Fugazi: “Instrument” Screening on 4/9!

Aquabear Legion is hosting a screening of Fugazi’s “Instrument” DVD at ARTS/West. Thursday, April 9th at 7:30pm $2 suggested donation *cover space, anything extra benefits Aquabear Legion A collaboration between filmmaker Jem Cohen and the Washington D.C band Fugazi, the project covers the ten-year period from the band’s inception in 1987 to 1997. Far from a traditional documentary, the project is a musical document: a portrait of musicians at work. The film takes its title from the Fugazi song of the same name, from their 1993 album, In on the Kill Taker. Editing of the film was done by both Cohen and the members of the band over the course of five years. It was shot from 1987 through 1998 on super 8, 16mm and video and is composed mainly of footage of concerts, interviews with the band members, practices, tours and time spent in the studio recording their 1995 album, Red Medicine. The film also includes portraits of fans as well as interviews with them at various Fugazi shows around the United States throughout the years. The Instrument Soundtrack by Fugazi was released in conjunction with the film.
