Aquabear County Fair Preview: DAY FOUR Sunday, March 6 at ARTS/West

The 5th annual Aquabear County Fair is coming up this weekend (March 3-6) and we think this year just might be the best yet. The Aquabear is serving up four days of Ohio music with 16 bands. We finish the 5th annual Aquabear County Fair off with a FREE afternoon potluck at the always awesome ARTS/West (132 W. State Street in Athens) on SUNDAY, MARCH 6 at 2:00pm. Its a great lineup too featuring Super Desserts (columbus), Brian Harnetty (columbus), and Athens’ own Adam Remnant. Plus it’s free (though donations help pay for bands, space, and sound) and it’s a potluck so bring some food to share and enjoy some amazing music. Trust us, you will have a great time. We’re bringing kelbasa and bread from Crumbs and a giant chocolate bunny. Super Desserts are a fantastic band from Columbus, Ohio. Come see them this afternoon and you will love them as much as we do.  Brian Harnetty is a musician and artist from ohio, and his work involves overlooked elements of sound. many of his pieces transform found material––including field recordings, transcriptions, and historic recordings––into personal sound worlds. He’s recorded and worked with Will Oldham, and graced stages...

Aquabear County Fair Preview: NIGHT THREE Saturday, March 5 at The Union

The 5th annual Aquabear County Fair is coming up this weekend (March 3-6) and we think this year just might be the best yet. The Aquabear is serving up four days of Ohio music with 16 bands. SATURDAY, March 5th the County Fair moves back to The Union for a huge night of rock and roll. Chickenpussy (Athens), Hex Net (Athens), Megachurch (Cleveland), Scubadog (Athens), Left Hand Shake (Athens), and Weedghost (Athens/Dayton). Music starts at 9pm (sharp), doors before that. Chickenpussy! I guarantee that I will be right up in front of the stage rocking out really hard. I hope we can all do that together. Hex Net is Seth Riddlebarger (Dragline Brothers) new project with an all-star lineup of some of our county’s finest musicians. These guys play some damn near perfect psychedelic garage rock, and can be counted on for both badass riffs and weird projects. There is no videos of the Hex Net, so you will just have to come see them with your real non-internet eyes. Megachurch is from Cleveland, Ohio. They were described by our own Aquabear writer Kris Poland who said of their self titled debut “Through a mere six songs, Megachurch rocks...

Aquabear County Fair Preview: NIGHT TWO Friday, March 4 at Casa Cantina

The 5th annual Aquabear County Fair is coming up this weekend (March 3-6) and we think this year just might be the best yet. The Aquabear is serving up four days of Ohio music with 16 bands. Remember to head over to our Facebook to see our favorite videos of all of this year’s bands. FRIDAY, March 4th the  County Fair at Casa Cantina with a FREE SHOW featuring She Bears (Columbus), Whale Zombie (Athens),  and Narrow & The Brights (Columbus). The show starts at 10:30pm and is FREE, however we do encourage donations which will go to Aquabear Legion and helps us cover some of the costs of the Aquabear County Fair! She Bears call Columbus home now, but they just can’t stay away from Athens. These guys have been busy the past year… touring around the country, signing to Deep Elm Records, and showing up somehow on both Teen Mom and in the Apple Store. But, trust me these guys aren’t big enough superstars to not want you to buy them drinks. Whale Zombie are a shoegaze-y, psychedelic, fuzzy band from here in Athens that has really been playing some badass shows lately. They have played basements,...

THURSDAY, MARCH 3rd the  County Fair kicks off at The Union with Zoobombs (Japan), Wheels On Fire (Athens), Valleyboys (Athens), and The Pleasure Domes (Athens). 10pm, cover. The whole night is curated by Blackout! Zoobombs join the Aquabear County Fair as the only non-Ohio act this year and The Aquabear’s first international collaboration. THE ZOOBOMBS were formed by DON Matsuo (vocals/guitar), Matta (keyboards), and Moostop (bass) in Tokyo in September 1994 and — together with various drummers — have been amazing rock audiences in Japan, North America and Australia ever since. Expect punk, funk, and really anything else you can think of. Wheels On Fire are a rock and roll band from Athens described as “Elvis Costello meets The Stooges”, and they’ve put out records on Big Legal Mess and Trouble In Mind. This four piece has played clubs all over the USA and Europe, and their new LP Liar Liar is really, really good. Valleyboys are self-described as “essentially- fast garage...

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: This Moment In Black History

Aquabear is extremely honored to welcome Cleveland punk-rockers This Moment in Black History to the Union tonight to close out the Fourth Annual Aquabear County Fair. Since forming in 2001, the band have toured the nation extensively and become a staple of Athens own Blackoutfest. The group will likely be premiering some songs from Public Square, their new release on the Chicago underground label Smog Veil Records. If you’re a fan of rock n’ roll that is noisy and abrasive in all the right ways, there’s no better place to be than the Union tonight. Here’s some video of This Moment in Black History at Donewaiting‘s 5th anniversary back in 2008.

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Dragline Bros

Dragline Bros. (formerly The Redtails for those that can go back that far) are one of the most kickass rock and roll bands I have ever seen. Aquabear is glad to welcome them back for another County Fair TONIGHT at Casa Cantina they will be closing out the night. This band contains some of Athens’ finest musicians, as a bassist I would give my left leg to play like Andrew Weiland and I am sure most guitarists would feel that way about Seth Riddlebarger’s solos, and drummers for Chris McKee’s everything. And they will be joined tonight by a few extra members, though we know it’s not Tim Peacock cause he went to Pittsburgh for the weekend. Check out this great video of the Dragline Bros. playing last year’s Blackoutfest at The Union courtesy of our good friend Milo:

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Sun God

Cleveland’s Sun God have in the past  described themselves as “arena punk… in a good way” and I completely agree. These guys contain members of Insurrect and countless other Cleveland bands of years past and they will definitely test your hearing threshold. They joined us at the 2nd annual Aquabear County Fair a few years back and still remain one of the loudest things to ever happen at ARTS/West. Plus they have a brand new split 12″ with This Moment In Black History that comes out on March 5 and will most certainly be available at the show. Don’t miss these guys, they don’t come down to Athens nearly enough. Come see Sun God and a whole host of others at the final night of the 2010 Aquabear County Fair at The Union on Saturday, March 6th at 8pm. It’s all about those riffs, dude. Check out Sun God (with Kevin filling in on bass instead of guitar, they are back to a four piece now though) playing at the 2009 Compound Fest in Cleveland.

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Seascapes

Aquabear is pretty pumped to have Seascapes play their first County Fair… they will close out the first night TONIGHT at The Bruce Manor (show starts at 7pm) joining Thx. Tiger, In Silent Movies, and Dead Winds of Summer. Made up of members of Spooktober, Paper Machetes, Russenorsk, Manor Animals, The Donnybrooks, and more Seascapes play damn good poppy rock and roll. Check out the video below of Seascapes on “Guest List” from ACRN.com Guest List Episode 1: Seascapes from ACRN.com on Vimeo.

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Dead Winds of Summer

Dead Winds of Summer is the solo project from Andrew Lampela (Weedghost, Kid Panda Hands, Goodbye Goats, SacLunch, Wizzard Beasts, and 9 million more). Dead Winds is equal parts improv, loops, and atmosphere and just like Andrew’s other projects in those veins this one hits the mark right on. This is the perfect way to start off the Aquabear County Fair so make sure to come out to The Bruce Manor TONIGHT at 7pm, Andrew will start around 7:45, followed by Thx. Tiger, In Silent Movies, and Seascapes. Unfortunately there are no Dead Winds of Summer videos to be found, but here’s part fo Weedghost’s set from last year’s Nelsonville Music Festival (right before Mudhoney!)

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: She Bears

Aquabear gave She Bears some love (it’s a bear thing) a while back when they put out their last record. This interview is funnier than anything that I could write right now, so we will just link to that. She Bears are from Athens, Ohio though I hear talk they will be leaving for the bright lights of Columbus, Ohio after spending the Summer touring around.  Come on out to Aquabear County Fair night two a  free show at Casa Cantina on Friday, March 5th to see She Bears join Dragline Bros, Manor Animals, and Chris Biester. And take a look at the lady bears making an appearence on ACRN’s Guestlist in the video below: ACRN.com: Guest List: She Bears – Watch more Videos at Vodpod.

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: In Silent Movies

In Silent Movies are a new-ish Athens band that has already sharpened a pretty distinct sound and we are glad to welcome them aboard the first ever Aquabear County Fair performance on Thursday, March 4th at The Bruce Manor. Each time I see these guys, I am more and more impressed. Come see them at their (well 2 out of 3) home base in the basement at the Manor. And make sure to keep a look out for their new EP They Had Faces Then which is slated to come out in March (which is today! i hope it is at the show on Thursday). I have been looking around like crazy but cannot find a video, so come on out and see them in the flesh and film it. These boys play some damn good rock and roll and I think one of them is from Texas.

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Megachurch

Aquabear is pretty excited about Cleveland, Ohio’s Megachurch making its first visit down to Athens… These guys are damn good, they even opened up for Mission of Burma at last year’s Studio-Rama. A drummer and two basses, these guys have spent a good deal of time over the years in many other projects both past and current including Machine Go Boom, The Buried Wires, Washout Corporation, and a lot more. These guys play sweet math rock driven by pounding drums and twice the bass. Megachurch is playing the Aquabear County Fair at The Union on Saturday, March 6th. Check out this video of them playing at last year’s Compund Fest in Cleveland!

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Manor Animals

Manor Animals are an Athens supergroup of sorts, made up of the five residents of The Bruce Manor house on West Union Street in Athens. Tim Race (Russenorsk), Zach Inscho (Seascapes, Russenorsk), Alex Eiler (She Bears), Josh Landis (In Silent Movies), and Mike Jones (also of In Silent Movies) make up a group that despite their involvement in many other projects definitely has it own sound. These songs rock and their is a depth to their live shows that comes from being in a band with everyone you live in a house with. Good stuff. They just finished an EP that I am hoping to get a hold of soon. Manor Animals will be playing the Aquabear County Fair at Casa Cantina on Friday, March 5th and that is a FREE SHOW, so you have no excuse. Video below from Andrew Logan of Manor Animals at The Spacement:

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Thx. Tiger

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am playing with this project at the Aquabear County Fair, and played with Scott in Casual Future for years. Thx. Tiger is the current outlet for Scott Spice’s recordings, Scott (and myself and others) played for years in Athens band Casual Future. We stopped playing last June because most everyone was moving but Scott continued to write and eventually recorded a album’s worth of songs, playing everything himself (I think). And the record is awesome. Never would I have thought my next live project after Casual Future would be in a band with Scott Spice again, but I am thrilled to play some drums (of all things) and help a few more people hear these songs. You can listen to those Thx. Tiger songs on the Myspace page. It will be very nice to play for folks Thx. Tiger will be playing the Aquabear County Fair on Thursday, March 4th at The (bruce) Manor. We will play early so seriously get there at 7pm. Casual Future was not a well-filmed band, so all I can link you to in a visual sense is a performance from last year’s County Fair were we played our newest song...

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: We March

Oh man, I cannot in any way at all think about my life without We March. When I came to Athens as an Ohio University freshman in 2001, We March was one of the first bands I saw down here and it made me feel instantly at home. These guys are the real deal. And we are honored to have them once again play their third Aquabear County Fair on Saturday, March 6th at The Union. Not only has We March seen most venues and towns the road has to offer, been written up in Maximum Rock and Roll, and broken bones while playing shows but they have been doing it FOR TEN YEARS plus. And they are still very, very good. Watch the video of them playing last year’s Blackoutfest from our friend Milo:

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Chris Biester

Chris Biester is arguably the best damn musician in this town, so what better way to open up the Friday night Casa show then with a set from him? Chris hosts the weekly Wednesday Open Stage at Casa Cantina and melts all of our faces with the occasional Chickenpussy performance besides working as an artist at Passion Works Studio in uptown Athens. And of course, I cannot preview a Biester show without bringing up his former band, Athens legends Appalachian Death Ride. For those of you who have never heard ADR you should remedy that problem immediately. Watch Chris play solo and check out a great Appalachian Death Ride video for “The Serpent”  put together by Mike Elliott below and come see Mr. Biester play himself FOR FREE at the Aquabear County Fair on Friday, March 5th at Casa Cantina.

COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Weedghost

There is one band that has played every Aquabear County Fair, and the even played the first Aquabear Showcase at The Wire in 2005. That band is Weedghost. They will be joining us at again at The Union on Saturday, March 6th. Comprised of Andrew Lampela and Kris Poland, Weedghost has been making and looping noise for over 5 years. These fine folks also help out a ton with Aquabear and have spent time playing in The Arch Villans, Collapse, Kid Panda Hands, Dinner of Swords and the 1,000 bands Andrew has been in. Weedghost has also been part of the group of Athens musicians who hosted and played at the regular (and now semi-regular) ARTS/West Noise Nights. At this year’s County Fair Weedghost will be playing short sets inbetween bands at The Union on Saturday, March 6th and it wouldn’t be out of the question to see them at Casa Cantina on Friday, March 5th. COUNTY FAIR PREVIEW: Men of Gentle Birth

So. Aquabear has decided to preview one band EVERY DAY in the weeks leading up to the Aquabear County Fair on March 4-6, 2010.  In all, 15 bands will be playing this year over the course of three nights and three venues. Today marks our first entry: Columbus, Ohio’s Men of Gentle Birth. They will be joining the Fair on Saturday, March 6th at The Union. First off. Holy crap! These guys haven’t played in several years (I believe one of their last shows was the 2nd annual Aquabear County Fair at Casa Cantina in 2008), and have remained a favorite of mine and many others too. Aquabear considers it an honor that MOGB has decided to get back together at our little County Fair, and we couldn’t be more excited. If you haven’t seen Men of Gentle Birth before you really need to be at The Union on Saturday, March 6th. Seriously. And instead of trying to describe how much I love their music, watching the video below of a badass show downstairs at The Union about four years ago…
