NOTE: This was recorded during the Covid-19 Pandemic, but before the events of this week related to the murder of George Floyd by 4 Minneapolis police officers. While recognizing that this is just a small Ohio music podcast on a far-flung website I still feel it is important to use the platform I have to express my full and complete solidarity with those across the country protesting the killing of black people in this country by the police. Please consider doing what you can to lift up the voices in your community that need to be heard. And if you are so inclined, please donate a few bucks to the Columbus Freedom Fund, The Bail Project, Black Lives Matter, or any other organization that is helping in this fight. They need your support, and every little bit helps. And around here at The Western Reserve this is a great time to mention that we are really big fans the Zinn Education Project too.

This episode transports back to my youth, and my first experiences with Ohio music being made by friends and people in my immediate community. We start way back in the late 90’s with tales of the Pork Grinder’s Ball in Lorain, and move on to Refugee Records, and the early forms of Aquabear Legion. Lots of great music and hopefully the right amount of old man nostalgia. We kick off this week’s episode with a Jenny Mae song in memory of the late Columbus musician who passed away last week.

Well, Brian decided it was finally time to make his own podcast and he is excited to present the results of the first episode of The Moose Is Loose! This podcast will focus on Ohio music and is named after the first ever compilation project he put together in 2003 (which you can download for FREE here). This episode showcases some of Brian’s favorite songs from the Aquabear online compilations and features music from The Franchise, The Makebelieves, Dragline Brothers, We March, Mike Elliott, Machine Go Boom, Washout Corporation, Neo Nothing, Casual Future, The Math Squad, Casiotone Orchestra, Men of Gentle Birth, Blackark, Matt Collander, and Small Object a. Not much talking in this one (Brian is still perfecting his smooth NPR voice) but you will get to hear our host babble a bit about his history with Ohio music. The first of many episodes to come.
Aquabear is pretty excited about Cleveland, Ohio’s Megachurch making its first visit down to Athens… These guys are damn good, they even opened up for Mission of Burma at last year’s Studio-Rama. A drummer and two basses, these guys have spent a good deal of time over the years in many other projects both past and current including Machine Go Boom, The Buried Wires, Washout Corporation, and a lot more. These guys play sweet math rock driven by pounding drums and twice the bass.
The Aquabear Legion is celebrating the release of yet another compilation (Volume 3!, our 5th overall..) on Saturday, July 26th at Casa Cantina here in Athens. The compilation features music from: We March, Southeast Engine, Machine Go Boom, Casual Future, Silo Circuit, Russenorsk, The Makebelieves, The Hiders, Woody Pines and The Lonesome Two, The X Bolex, 1point3, Kaslo, Mike Elliott, Spooktober, Men of Gentle Birth, Sun God, (the) Giants of Gender, and maybe even a few more.
