Thanks to all who came out for our annual Aquabear Legion Pancake Breakfast at ARTS/West last Sunday. It was our most successful one yet, and I have to say it was the tastiest one too. Lots of thank you’s and love to send around so please see below and support those who support the Aquabear! Pictures from John McVicker, and more below!
There are a lot of local businesses and awesome individuals who helped make this event happen and a big Aquabear thank you goes out to ARTS/West (for the space!), Snowville Creamery (for milk, cream, and half & half!), Shagbark Seed and Mill Company (for flour for our pancakes!), Donkey Coffee (for the coffee and cups!), Jackie O’s (for fresh baked bread!), King Family Farm (for our bacon and eggs!), Coonskin Sugarbush (for the maple syrup!), Athens Farmers Market, Tim Peacock & Matt McElroy (for playin’ 78’s all afternoon!), Becky Whittington (for making sausage gravy!), Noah Andrews & 5unday 5essions for coming down to cover the event, all of Aquabear Legionnaires who helped cook/mix/wash dishes/and everything else, and a big thank you to the Lauchnor, Burton & Landon families (for lending griddles to make our pancakes!)
Aquabear Legion will be holding its annual Pancake Breakfast at ARTS/West on Sunday, January 30th from 1pm-4pm. Aquabear is working with Snowville Creamery, Donkey Coffee, Shagbark Mill, Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery and a whole bunch more so that people can support local music while eating local food. ONLY 5 BUCKS! Bring friends, tell people, and help spread the word. ARTS/West is located at 132 W. State Street in Athens (up the hill from town at the fork in the road by the cemetary) and the breakfast takes place in the basement.
The Aquabear Legion Pancake Breakfast will feature all you can eat pancakes (made with Shagbark Mill flour and Snowville Creamery milk), Jackie O’s fresh baked bread, and all you can drink Donkey Coffee for only $5! There will also be (King Family Farm) bacon upgrades available for a small donation. Money raised at the event will go to Aquabear Legion to help us continue our programming and work throughout the year and will help with our initial non-profit filing costs. The event will also feature Tim Peacock and Matt McElroy spinning 78 rpm records all afternoon long.
Todd and I are headin’ to the Athens Farmers Market on Saturday morning to pick up some bacon, syrup, and a few more things too. Come on out and eat some very good local food and support your Aquabear! Find the event on Facebook here.
Aquabear is pretty excited about Cleveland, Ohio’s Megachurch making its first visit down to Athens… These guys are damn good, they even opened up for Mission of Burma at last year’s Studio-Rama. A drummer and two basses, these guys have spent a good deal of time over the years in many other projects both past and current including Machine Go Boom, The Buried Wires, Washout Corporation, and a lot more. These guys play sweet math rock driven by pounding drums and twice the bass.
Oh man, I cannot in any way at all think about my life without We March. When I came to Athens as an Ohio University freshman in 2001, We March was one of the first bands I saw down here and it made me feel instantly at home. These guys are the real deal. And we are honored to have them once again play their third Aquabear County Fair on Saturday, March 6th at The Union.
Not only has We March seen most venues and towns the road has to offer, been written up in Maximum Rock and Roll, and broken bones while playing shows but they have been doing it FOR TEN YEARS plus. And they are still very, very good.
Watch the video of them playing last year’s Blackoutfest from our friend Milo:
Chris Biester is arguably the best damn musician in this town, so what better way to open up the Friday night Casa show then with a set from him? Chris hosts the weekly Wednesday Open Stage at Casa Cantina and melts all of our faces with the occasional Chickenpussy performance besides working as an artist at Passion Works Studio in uptown Athens. And of course, I cannot preview a Biester show without bringing up his former band, Athens legends Appalachian Death Ride. For those of you who have never heard ADR you should remedy that problem immediately.
Aquabear continues to celebrate our 5th birthday with the release of TWO MORE FREE ONLINE COMPILATIONS! These two go way back in the archives… The Moose is Loose is a collection of Athens and Cleveland music from 2003 and was put together by Brian Koscho right before the start of Aquabear and features some great bands (Southeast Engine, Self Destruct Button, The Franchise, Leslie Keffer, and more). The Refugee Records compilation was originally released in 2001 by Cleveland musician Dave Straub and features even more great music from across the state (including Rancid Yak Butter Tea Party, Small Object a, Neo Nothing, Washout Corporation, and more!)

A collaboration between filmmaker Jem Cohen and the Washington D.C band Fugazi, the project covers the ten-year period from the band’s inception in 1987 to 1997. Far from a traditional documentary, the project is a musical document: a portrait of musicians at work.
The film takes its title from the Fugazi song of the same name, from their 1993 album, In on the Kill Taker. Editing of the film was done by both Cohen and the members of the band over the course of five years. It was shot from 1987 through 1998 on super 8, 16mm and video and is composed mainly of footage of concerts, interviews with the band members, practices, tours and time spent in the studio recording their 1995 album, Red Medicine. The film also includes portraits of fans as well as interviews with them at various Fugazi shows around the United States throughout the years. The Instrument Soundtrack by Fugazi was released in conjunction with the film.
