Athens’ own Donkey Coffee & Espresso will be fueling this year’s Aquabear Pancake Breakfast by providing all the coffee! That’s right along with all-you-can-eat pancakes you also get all-you-can-drink coffee courtesy of Donkey! Besides making a really good cup of coffee Donkey also hosts live music, films, art shows, and many other events. We are hosting part of this year’s 6th annual Aquabear County Fair at Donkey with an early show on Friday, March 9th. You can find out much more on their website!

King Family Farm is located just outside of Athens in Albany, Ohio and makes some of the finest pork and chicken products I have ever had. You can find their items used in restaurants all over the state and can purchase them yourself at the Athens Farmers Market. Aquabear uses King Family Farm bacon at our annual Pancake Breakfast and we use their eggs in our pancake mix too. “ King Family Farm pork products are all made from hogs naturally raised on our farm in Albany, Ohio.  We use no growth hormones or antibiotics in our feeds.  We process our own feed using locally grown grains.  No animal or industrial by-products. ” Sounds good to us.

The Aquabear is very excited to top all the pancakes this Sunday with some Sticky Pete’s Maple Syrup from right here in Athens County! Sticky Pete’s can be found everywhere from Casa Nueva to the Easton Farmers Market in Columbus and it is fantastic. We could not ask for anything better to top our pancakes with. Now, Sticky Pete’s doesn’t have a website but our Athens ex-pat friend Susan Hilvert was involved with a project called TerraStories that traveled around meeting female farmers and food producers and ran across Laura Berry and Sticky Pete’s on the cross-region journey. TerraStories says this of Laura and Sticky Pete’s “She only sells her stuff locally, but her clout is nation-wide: Sticky Pete’s has been repeatedly recognized by tastemakers as some of the best syrup on the market.”

Fluff Bakery & Catering is a relatively new addition to Court Street in Athens, Ohio but it is already gaining quite the reputation for being very, very, very, very awesome. Was that enough? They make tons of amazing treats (including homemade snickers bars, whoopie pies, and various sweets) and serve a solid sandwich too all while working with alot of local producers. Fluff has also been making Blockhead Donuts, which will be available for an upgrade at this year’s Pancake Breakfast! DONUTS! Snowville Creamery is a magical thing. The provide the milk for our pancake mix, the half and half for the coffee, and their heavy whipping cream is made into homemade butter and whipped cream by Sherri. Also, Snowville always sends along extra milk for drinkin’ and this year we are really excited to have their new chocolate milk too. Snowville makes some amazing stuff and its available all around Ohio and even as far as Washington DC. Aquabear's annual Pancake Breakfast is Sunday, January 29th from 1pm-4pm at ARTS/West in Athens

It’s the beginning of a new year and that means… It’s Aquabear Legion Pancake Breakfast time! This year we host the best breakfast of the year at ARTS/West on Sunday, January 29th from 1pm-4pm. Last year’s event was so much fun and the food was great so we decided once again to go ALL LOCAL with the food, local food being used to support local music makes sense to us! This year will mark our SIXTH Pancake Breakfast.

$5 will get you:
• all-you-can-eat pancakes (made with Shagbark Mill spelt flour and Snowville milk)
• Donkey Coffee
• Snowville Chocolate Milk (while it lasts)
• and special treats throughout the afternoon
• Sticky Pete’s Maple Syrup and homemade butter and whipped cream from Snowville products (while it lasts)

Bill Fox: We talk about Bill Fox almost as much as the Black Keys on this blog. The Cleveland troubadour who used to helm The Mice has become one of my favorite songwriters of all time, and by the time Feb. 3 rolls around, he’ll have a new album to play behind. But really, even without a new album, any Bill Fox show is a big deal and rare treat.

Sundown: It was probably only a matter of time before TK Webb put together a band here in Columbus after moving from Brooklyn (Kansas City before that). He chose the right partners: Dustin White (Moons), Blake Pfister (Moon High) and Grant Driskell (TV Eye). Don’t sleep on the band’s debut cassette EP, Mansion Burning, and keep your ear out for more stuff the band is currently recording.

DJ Detox: If you’ve been coming to this site for any period of time, or you even occasionally attend shows, you know Detox. He’s one of the most in-demand deejays in the city. He’ll spin tunes between sets.

We are kicking this off with an amazing website archive of Central Ohio music from the past (and some present), the wonderful Minimum Tillage Farming. The premise here is simple and one that Aquabear loves… archiving and giving a home to awesome recordings. The focus is mostly on important Columbus and Ohio bands of times past such as Great Plains, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, New Bomb Turks, Gaunt, Scrawl and also on bands that are still active such as El Jesus de Magico, Cheater Slicks, Bygones, Lydia Loveless, and Nick Tolford and Company. The Aquabear Legion is looking for works of art in a variety of forms and types depicting interpretations of our mascot and namesake, the mythical Aquabear. Other than that there are not many limitations or rules, we just want to see what you think of when you think about an Aquabear.

We are hoping to gather all of these up for a big Aquabear art show in Athens in 2012, most likely during the 6th annual Aquabear County Fair on March 9-10, 2012. In addition, we hope to use this art to continue collaborating between Ohio musicians and Ohio artists by featuring it on our website and in other items to promote Aquabear Legion (pins, prints, t-shirts, handbills, etc.). Also, if you are so kind to donate your work to use (hey, we’re almost a non-profit now!) we are hoping to auction off or sell some of this work to raise funds.

Please contact us at contact@aquabearlegion.com if you have any questions or to RSVP that you plan on submitting. All entries for this round are due by March 1, 2012 but this will be an ongoing project so entries are always welcome. Feel free to pass this along to anyone else you think would be interested!

Last month, Southeast Engine had the pleasure of taping an episode of NPR’s Mountain Stage. Her new album Cream of the Low Tide is available for a free download from her bandcamp! People With Animal Heads says Val “has been able to create singer/songwriter music for people who are sick to death of singer/songwriter music”. That sounds good to us. Athens’ own Aquabear Legionnaire Andrew Lampela will open the night up with a set from his solo project Dead Winds of Summer. Get there early cause he likes to play before people come.

The D-Rays will headline the evening with their surfy punk rock tunes, Dune is a new Athens stoner rock band featuring members of We March (and many other Athens bands), Homemade Drugs (ex-Sandcrawler) hail from Cincinnati and are in town to record their new EP with Chris Lute, and Bram Riddlebarger & His Lonesome Self will open up the night with a solo set from the one man band.

Lobsterfest kicks off Thursday at 10 p.m. at Casa Cantina. Headliners include Columbus band Tin Armor and Athens act Scubadog, while The Kyle Sowashes and Stomp the Condor, both of Columbus, are opening.

Lobsterfest continues Friday at 10 p.m. at The Union. Headliners include Detroit art rockers Child Bite and Columbus post-punk band Narrow and the Brights. The night will begin with Cincinnati act Evolve, and Athens band Nurser.

Finally, on Saturday at noon, Lobsterfest takes over South Green’s lawn for an all-day extravaganza. New York City dream pop band Asobi Seksu and Detroit indie-rockers Prussia will be headlining. Athens favorites Brothertiger and She Bears will also be playing on Saturday. Expect to see many other acts from Athens and Columbus for a full line up check out the Lobsterfest Facebook event or ACRN.com.

To finish the evening on Saturday, Dave Rave, Busted BASS and the ACRN.com DJ Crew will be presenting a Lobsterfest themed Dave Rave at 10 p.m. at The Union.
